Japanese Black Ink Painting for Beginners

A Follow-on One-Day Japanese Black Ink Painting Workshop for those who have previously taken our Introductory Workshop will be held at the beautiful Brú Ború Cultural Centre beside the historic Rock of Cashel in Co. Tipperary on Thursday the 7th of May (Book Here).

Sumi-e is the Japanese word for the Art of Black Ink Painting. It is a unique art form in which the fewest possible strokes are used to capture the essence of the subject being painted using only black ink, handmade paper and a special brush.

In this Workshop, participants who have previously attended our Introductory Workshop will continue on to new subjects.

For those wishing to attend this workshop who have not yet taken our Introductory Workshop, it is possible to attend a live online Introductory Workshop on Tuesday the 21st of April. (Click: Go to Store to book if desired.)

In this live online Half-Day Introductory Workshop, beginners will be introduced to the Art of Black Ink Painting and will learn about materials, basic brushstrokes and techniques used for painting grasses, flowers, trees and mountains. Sumi-e is the Japanese word for the Art of Black Ink Painting. It is a unique art form using only black ink, handmade paper and a special brush.

In this Workshop for beginners, participants will be introduced to Sumi-e materials and will learn basic brushstrokes and techniques used for painting grasses, flowers, distant trees and mountains. (In follow-on Workshops, additional subjects such as Zen circles and calligraphy will be introduced, with the formal writing of the Japanese character for ‘Eternity’ using basic brush strokes).
