Japanese Black Ink Painting (Sumi-e) is a remarkable art form that uses only black ink, handmade paper, and a special brush.
In our online beginner's course membership, you will learn basic brushstrokes and techniques for painting grasses, flowers, trees, mountains and landscapes. The emphasis is in the process rather than the finished work.
Sumi-e is an art form that teaches self-awareness and helps the artist learn to see and feel. The mind must be clear and the body relaxed. In Japanese Black Ink Painting, the fewest possible brushstrokes are used to capture the essence of the subject being painted. It is a beautiful, unique and expressive art form.

Two new In-Person Japanese Black Ink Painting Workshops on in Ireland this July are now open for booking. The first is a One-Day Workshop at the BrĂș BorĂș Cultural Centre  beside the historic Rock of Cashel in Co. Tipperary on Saturday the 8th of July, and a Half-Day Workshop at the South Tipperary Arts Centre in Clonmel on Saturday the 15th of July. In these Workshops for Beginners, participants will learn brushstrokes and techniques for painting grasses, flowers, trees and mountains.
Sumi-e is the Japanese word for the Art of Black Ink Painting. It is a unique art form in which the fewest possible strokes are used to capture the essence of the subject being painted using only black ink, handmade paper and a special brush. It is calming and relaxing.
