Sumi-e is the Japanese word for the Art of Black Ink Painting. It is a unique art form in which the fewest possible strokes are used to capture the essence of the subject being painted using only black ink, handmade paper and a special brush.

In this Workshop for beginners, participants will be introduced to Sumi-e materials and will learn basic brushstrokes and techniques used for painting grasses, flowers, distant trees and mountains.

For students who have previously attended our Workshop for beginners, variations of the strokes and techniques will be introduced and practised (concurrently with introduction of basic material for new students).
